Anton Melbye's 1853 drawing of the English fleet at anchor off Beykoz on the Bosphorus, reprinted as an aquatint in indigo grey on warm cream paper.

The original

“The English Fleet Anchored at the Town of Beykoz, North of Istanbul” by Anton Melbye (Danish, 1818–1875), 1853, is in the public domain. The image comes from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which shares it under CC0 (no rights reserved).

The print

Tiraj reinterprets the drawing as an aquatint, the etching technique of the great 18th- and 19th-century views of Constantinople: a resin grain bitten in five tone steps for the clouds and the water, with the masts and rigging bitten as lines. The ink is indigo grey.

The paper tone is part of the artwork; print on white matte paper. The warm cream sheet and the printing texture are printed into the file.

The 3:2 file is 284 dpi at 36×24 in and 300 dpi or more at the smaller sizes. The other files are 300 dpi at their largest size.

Each file is cropped slightly to fill its proportion; the subject stays whole.

Printing tips

Use heavyweight white matte paper (200 gsm or more, archival matte or cotton rag). Print at 100% / actual size, not 'fit to page', and pick the file that matches your frame. This is a landscape artwork: all files are horizontal.
Colours can vary slightly between screens and printers.

License

The original is in the public domain (verified with the museum’s API on 2026-11-06). The Tiraj interpretation is ours: the files are for personal use only. Print them for your own home or as a gift; please don’t resell, share or redistribute the files or sell prints made from them. Full license.

Digital download: nothing is shipped, frame not included. Colours vary slightly between screens and printers.
