Henry Bradbury's 1855 nature print of the beech fern, roots and all, reprinted as a Prussian blue cyanotype on warm washi paper, after Anna Atkins's fern cyanotypes.

The original

“Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland: Polypodium Phegopteris” by Henry Bradbury (British, 1829–1860), 1855–1856, is in the public domain. The image comes from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which shares it under CC0 (no rights reserved).

The print

Tiraj turns the nature print into a cyanotype, the iron-based sun print Anna Atkins used for her ferns in the 1850s: a single Prussian blue for the fronds and the fine roots, with hand-brushed edges and light chemical staining.

The paper tone is part of the artwork; print on white matte paper. The warm washi fibres, brush edges and stains are printed into the file.

Printing tips

Use heavyweight white matte paper (200 gsm or more, archival matte or cotton rag). Print at 100% / actual size, not 'fit to page', and pick the file that matches your frame.
Colours can vary slightly between screens and printers.
